This past week was a busy and meaningful one. On Monday, I had the honor of traveling to Washington, D.C., to attend the Presidential Inauguration of Donald Trump for his second term. Witnessing this historic event reminded me of the ongoing responsibility we all share in serving our communities and our nation. This responsibility to serve has always been important to me, and that will not change.

Budget Planning Begins Amid Weather Challenges

Following Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we began “budget week,” a pivotal time for the General Assembly as we review Georgia’s financial priorities. While winter storms delayed most in-person hearings, Governor Kemp released his official budget proposals, and our work continued remotely. Passing a balanced budget is our constitutional duty, and these proposals provide the foundation for our state’s financial future.

Gov. Kemp’s budget focuses heavily on recovery efforts for areas affected by Hurricane Helene, with over $614 million earmarked for debris cleanup, agriculture relief, and rebuilding vital infrastructure. I am committed to ensuring that these funds are allocated wisely and fairly. Here’s a broad summary of his proposals.

Tax Relief and Infrastructure Investments

The governor also highlighted Georgia’s strong economic standing, made possible by sound fiscal policies. His budget includes a $1 billion tax rebate for 2024 and an accelerated phased income tax cut that would lower the rate to 4.99% by 2026. These measures will put more money back into the hands of hardworking Georgians where it belongs.

In addition, the proposals allocate $1.6 billion for transportation and water infrastructure, including $250 million for local road assistance grants. These investments will not only improve our state’s infrastructure but also create jobs and boost local economies.

Education and Healthcare Priorities

Our state’s future depends on strong education and healthcare systems, and I am pleased to see both prioritized in these proposals. Over $1 billion is allocated for education, including funding for the new Promise Scholarships and increased support for teacher benefits. On the healthcare front, one highlight is $150 million to increase funding of medical schools in Georgia, with a goal of strengthening our healthcare workforce and advancing medical research. By investing in our medical schools and research institutions, we can improve the quality of care for all Georgians while building a stronger healthcare workforce.

Supporting Public Safety and State Employees

Public safety and corrections also play a vital role in the budget, with $603 million proposed to address staffing, security, and inmate healthcare in Georgia’s correctional facilities. Additionally, $725 million is dedicated to strengthening state pension systems, ensuring financial stability for our hardworking public employees.
